Time Between Dates Calculator
The calculator will show how much time (in hours and minutes) has passed between two dates.
Calculator: time between dates
How it works
The tool measures the interval between two points in time. You set the start and end date and time – the calculator determines how many hours, minutes and full days fit between them. The result is displayed in two formats: total duration in hours and minutes, as well as a breakdown by days, hours and minutes.
The calculator counts absolute time between two points without considering work schedules, weekends or holidays. It counts everything – from the start mark to the finish mark. Suitable when you need to find out how much time has passed from the start date to the completion date, whether it's a few minutes or several days.
When it can be useful
Here are several situations where the app becomes handy:
- Calculating trip duration taking into account departure and arrival times.
- Calculating car, premises or equipment rental time with hourly billing.
- Analysing system logs with minute-by-minute calculation of operation durations.
- Determining parcel transit time when exact dispatch and receipt timestamps are known.
- Tracking actual hours worked with non-standard schedules or part-time work.
Step-by-step guide
The interface is divided into two logical halves: the start moment and the end moment. In each, you'll find a date field and a time field.
1. Set the start point. In the "Start date and time" block, select a date from the calendar or click the "Today" button to insert the current day. Next to it, set the time – or use the "Now" button for automatic insertion of the current hours and minutes.
2. Set the end point. Similarly, fill in the "End date and time" block. Make sure the finish doesn't come before the start, otherwise the calculation won't proceed.
3. Run the calculation. Click "Calculate". The results will appear below the button in two formats, and the selected range will be displayed at the top so you can verify the entered values.
What the numbers in the result mean
After clicking the button, you'll see two sets of numbers. The upper block shows the total duration in pure form:
- Hours – total number of whole hours elapsed from start to finish.
- Minutes – the remaining minutes.
Below, after the label "In days", there's a breakdown where the total duration is split across three levels:
- Days – number of full days (24 hours) that fit into the interval.
- Hours – remaining hours that didn't form a full day.
- Minutes – remaining minutes that didn't add up to a whole hour.
This dual format allows you to use both the pure arithmetic value and a more intuitive breakdown when needed.
