How to Calculate the Day of the Week for Any Date Mentally

For quickly calculating the day of the week mentally, mathematician John Conway developed the "Doomsday" algorithm. The method is based on the fact that each year has certain dates that fall on the same day of the week. This day is called the "Doomsday".

Step 1: Determining the Century's Anchor Day

Each century has its own base day of the week. For the 2000s, the anchor day is Tuesday. This is a constant for all calculations in the current century.

The following numbering of days of the week is used for calculations:

Step 2: Calculating the "Doomsday" for a Specific Year

Take the last two digits of the year and perform calculations using the formula: divide by 12, add the remainder and the quotient from dividing the remainder by 4. Let's break down the algorithm using the year 2026 as an example.

Separate the year digits: 26. Divide 26 by 12. We get a quotient of 2 and a remainder of 2. Divide the remainder 2 by 4, we get 0. Sum the three values: 2 + 2 + 0 = 4.

Add the result to the century's anchor day. The anchor day (Tuesday) has the ordinal number 2. Sum 2 + 4 = 6. The sixth day of the week is Saturday. The "Doomsday" for 2026 falls on Saturday.

Note: if the sum exceeds 6, simply subtract 7 from it (or find the remainder when dividing by 7). For example, for 2027 the sum equals 7, which corresponds to 0 – Sunday.

Step 3: Memorising Marker Dates

In each month, there is a date that always falls on the "Doomsday".

In leap years, the marker for January is the 4th, and for February – the 29th. Dates for other months remain unchanged.

Step 4: Calculating the Target Date

Let's determine the day of the week for 25 October 2026. We already know that the "Doomsday" for 2026 is Saturday. Determine the marker date for October. It's the 10th. This means 10 October 2026 is a Saturday.

Calculate the difference in days between the target date and the marker: 25 - 10 = 15 days. Divide the resulting difference by 7 to find the remainder of days. 15 divides by 7 with a remainder of 1.

Add the remainder to the "Doomsday". Saturday plus one day is Sunday. Result: 25 October 2026 is a Sunday.

If the target date is earlier than the marker (for example, 4 October), the difference will be negative (4 - 10 = -6). In this case, simply add 7 days to the "Doomsday" and subtract the difference, or count backwards from the "Doomsday" by the number of days in the difference.
