Subtract Weeks from Date
The calculator will show the date that results from subtracting a specified number of full weeks from the start date.
Calculator: subtract weeks from date
How the calculation works
The calculation uses full calendar weeks. Subtracting 1 week means moving back exactly 7 days. With this method, the resulting date always falls on the same day of the week as the start date.
Examples:
- 08/01 (Monday) − 1 week (7 days) = 01/01 (Monday)
- 22/05 (Friday) − 1 week (7 days) = 15/05 (Friday)
- 15/01 (Monday) − 2 weeks (14 days) = 01/01 (Monday)
- 31/03 (Tuesday) − 3 weeks (21 days) = 10/03 (Tuesday)
- 03/07 (Wednesday) − 4 weeks (28 days) = 05/06 (Wednesday)
- Select the start date. You can open the calendar in the input field or click the "Today" button to insert the current date.
- Enter the number of weeks to subtract. Type a whole number manually or use the buttons with numbers from 1 to 12. The field accepts only positive integers.
- Click the "Calculate" button. The start date and resulting date will be displayed in the results section.
How the Calculator Works
The calculator shifts the selected date backwards by the specified number of weeks. You enter a start date and the number of weeks, and receive a new date that differs from the original by exactly the specified number of full calendar weeks.
This calculation is useful for backward planning: when you know the end date and need to determine the start date accounting for weekly cycles.
The underlying arithmetic rule is simple: one week equals seven days. When you subtract N weeks, the tool subtracts exactly N × 7 days from the start date. This ensures the resulting date always falls on the same day of the week as the original.
Subtracting 3 weeks from a Tuesday will always give a Tuesday; 8 weeks from a Friday will give a Friday.
The formula used internally is: Result Date = Start Date − (Number of Weeks × 7). All calendar peculiarities, including leap years and varying month lengths, are accounted for in the calculation.
Calculation Examples
Project deadline. The final submission deadline is set for Friday, 15 May. A milestone review is scheduled for 3 weeks before this date. Subtract 3 weeks: 15/05 − 3 weeks (21 days) = 24/04.
Recurring events. You meet with your team every Thursday. Today is 12 June (Friday), and you need to find the date of the meeting that was 5 weeks ago. Subtract 5 weeks from 12/06 – the result is 8 May (Friday). If you take the nearest Thursday, 11/06, and subtract 5 weeks, the result is 7 May, a Thursday.
Training countdown. A course starts on 10 September (Wednesday). To find out when registration opened, if it started 12 weeks before the course, subtract 12 weeks: 10/09 − 12 weeks (84 days) = 18/06. This is also a Wednesday.
